I used fidonet to send internet email. I used "qmail" on pcboard bbs systems. all kinds of stuff that seem archaic now!

I also ran a BBS using RoboFX - a nice GUI BBS system (Chicago's Internet SuperServer with over 6000 unique users worldwide ).  Ran that from 1990 - 1994 and grew to a full blown ISP.  Dropped the BBS entirely and the rest is history.</description>
