Jack Cook you aren’t an expert…. Sorry!

The more I read what Jack Cook writes on Mobility Site and or Experience Mobility the more I realize the man has not a clue .. I would like to respond to each of his delirious comments about the iPhone..

Of course, we all know that AT&T’s performance in the “burbs” is less than stellar so total and quick access can (and will) be a continuing issue.

What in the world are you talking about Jack? The only place you couldn’t get a solid signal was in Maine in your second house. I personally have used EVERY provider and have traveled over 320,000 airline miles in the last 24 months and can honestly say AT&T/CINGULAR has been ROCK solid..

And the device is super expensive which is fine but Apple decided that they wanted to make a killing and they convinced AT&T that is is the right thing to do … but is it?

Now you are really stretching it.. How much was your Palm Treo 700w with Verizon? According to Engadget the Treo 700w was priced at $499.95!!! So what is the price of the 4GB iPhone? So I guess you DON’T mind buying super expensive phones too

As we were driving back from our vacation in Pennsylvania last week, we stopped at a rest area to have lunch. As we were sitting at the table, I was checking my feeds on my Palm and a fellow sitting at the next table asked how I liked the device. The conversation eventually moved onto the iPhone and he said he didn’t have one but his wife did so when she got home, he got to play with the device. He liked it, said it was cool but it would not fit his needs (he had a Blackberry). It didn’t hit me then but I did feel that it seemed like a strange scenario. You get to play with the device in the evening when your wife gets home…. well, I really didn’t think too much about it. He did talk about all the great things you can do with it … but he didn’t have one for himself, so I guess it really is not all that great.

I guess you stalking out the AT&T Stores and asking people if they would trade you for your Verizon 700w wasn’t too strange eh? Whats wrong if the guy enjoyed using his wife’s iPhone when he got home? Why if he uses a Blackberry couldn’t he get the iPhone to work with his environment? He could you know that right? Maybe not…

So I let that pass and went on with life as usual. Dealing with my JasJar, KJAM, Cingular 8525, Nokia N95 … all great devices. Along with them I use my Palm 700W (which is always with me) and my Palm 750. I switch devices almost every day … I like them all.

Of course you like them all!! THEY WERE FREE…. Also whatever “problems” you spoke about with AT&T and their service I guess you have with your “FREE” Treo 750 right? Oh sorry the JasJar (you bought that for $100) through the Microsoft MVP program.. The KJAM was free since you did a video for Andrew Brown to show your unboxing experience, the N95 was given to you by the PR company… So comon Jack nothing wrong with full disclosure right?

The Kaiser is a “manly device“. It’s robust, looks strong, exudes a masculine touch and silently says “I can do it all”. The iPhone doesn’t do that.

Oh so now its not a TOY it’s just that its not MANLY enough for a retired school teacher! I understand now?

And then I thought of that fellow talking about his wife’s iPhone. SHE had it, not him. Why? It’s slender, sleek, sexy and fits perfectly in her pocketbook. Yeah, it does some cool things but it just does not portray what I want in a device.

So I guess what your saying is that the iPhone is for women who normally aren’t power users and don’t have “REAL” business reasons to use manly phones.. WOW now that just is plain rude.. But coming from someone with hidden agenda’s I wouldn’t put it past you. Thanks for the humor…

I’m leaving the rest of this alone … but as for the AT&T comment - their network is pretty much crap in Denver. In my living room right now I have 2 bars on my 750. If I go stand at the base of my stairs to the top floor I get 1 bar. Outside the front door I get 2-3 depending on the weather. Oh, and gprs only. Edge isn’t available for about 5 miles from my house. Now, I’ll give you that I’m a little bit outside of town. So, right by Denver University my buddy had to keep his blackjack on the window sill or else he got no service in his house at all.

Maybe AT&T is great where you’ve been at, but it’s a big country. It also depends where in town you are… if you’re spending time downtown and in the airports then service will definitely be good. But get away from those core areas and the service with AT&T falls off rapidly atleast in my experience (including Denver, Austin, Nashville, and North Alabama).

II Suspect that if Jack had received a free I phone for purposes of his special review talents then we may hear a different story.

It makes me sick that these self appointed mobile Tec gurus, think that the rest of us are stupid.

An example of this is Jk on the run, which it is obvious to me that they don’t get much free gadgets because when they get the nokia n800 they forget to be objective an any attempt to do so is pure lip service.

I feel that they are so excited that they have this free device, they almost cant stop finding uses for it or praising it, whenever they get the opportunity.

Sure it is cool!! I purchased one, I also purchased the 770(the model before). which I may add that they did almost never mentioned, (I wonder why? maybe they would have had to buy one).

I believe that if you want to be respected as a “tech blogger”, than go out and buy some devices yourself. People will appreciate your honest comments and that will direct more traffic.

Now may be they can’t afford to buy many devices, which is another story, although from someone who spends huge amounts of my hard earned money on these devices (against my wife’s dismay), I would really appreciate honest and impartial reviews. If you cannot attract sponsors or advertisers than if you believe your blogs and podcasts are that good, charge for them… I would pay for a good podcast.
David Ciccone, I admire bloggers/podcaster like you because you are honest even to the point when companies won’t send you devices because they are afraid of what you may say, this is worth more to me than, the sickly over the top shameless praising of a free device they have been lucky to get.

Over praising is as much of a turn off as a poor review, those MVP’?s have some respect for yourselves remember it is not you that’s makes the money from these devices although you may get the occasional scraps thrown down by way of news and the odd review product.

I like many others agree with you Dave…

I really don’t care if Jack gets his units for free. What is not right is that he does not disclose this to his audience. I think what has happened in Jacks case is that he does not care about being impartial, all he cares about is getting free product and kissing peoples asses.

I know that some people don’t like the fact that we changed the format of the Podcast but it is high time that these people are called out and that their audiences know what their real agenda is.

They are more worried about staying an MVP or getting free product then doing what is right.

When I started calling him out he cried that I was being a bully. Well if telling the truth is being a bully then I am one.

I think that in this case Dave said what a lot of people are thinking. I also think that Jack is his own worse enemy when he posts stories like the one Dave wrote about.
Jack can think whatever he wants about the iPhone that, is his perogative, most folks will see that he is ill informed and that his arguments are weak.

I think it is funny that he thinks that the iPhone is not manly. I like to see him say that to someones face.

Jack it is time you really got a grip.
