NY Bus fares $2.50???

A loyal reader over at Mobility Today sent this up to me which also made me think “Did I miss something?” Darren writes, “I have a pic that your NYC readers might find entertaining or shocking. I have to take a bus and a subway to work every morning. Now i’m usually tired in the morning and am not fully functional until I get to work. However, I saw a sign this morning on a bus that woke me right up. It’s a sign that said the bus fare is $2.50. I thought I was seeing things and asked someone else next to me. It was indeed a sign that said $2.50. I asked the bus driver about it, and he said he doesn’t know. Seems like everyone was asking him when they were getting on. I guess this might be a sign of things to come. Is the MTA getting ready for a fare hike? Or did they mistakenly put signs out last year when the hike was turned down.

I’d be curious to see what your readers think. By the way, this was on a BX10 bus.

The MTA has already said there would be no fare hikes for 2007!

Could that be a fare for cash rather than pass holders?

I was pretty shocked recently to discover that a single one way trip on the London Tube had gone up to Â£4.00 (that’s pretty much $8!!!), but then read that’s only for cash customers. The Tube is plugging their ‘Oyster Card’ travel pass and the same journey is only Â£1.50 if you use an Oyster Card. A useful tip if you’re considering a trip to London.

I don’t take the bus in NYC but I take the subway and it’s $2.

I looked on http://www.mta.info/metrocard/mcgtreng.htm and it states:
The fare for a subway or local bus ride is $2.

It’s the same price for everyone. It’s $2 a ride. That’s why the picture is shocking. There is no reason for that sign to be on any bus.

I just visited London too. I bought a day pass for the Underground for Â£5.95 ($8). I used it for 10 separtate journeys which would have cost Â£40 ($80).
Bargain. So maybe the $2.50 fare is an incentive to use a similar system.

if worse comes to worse we can always ask congress to begin a work release structure for all those bus drivers getting a beating from the school moms!
